Jonathan Forsberg, MD

Jonathan A. Forsberg, MD, is an orthopaedic oncologist at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital and an adjunct associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Forsberg is board certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Forsberg specializes in the treatment of children and adults with bone and soft tissue sarcomas, a rare group of cancers, including osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma. In addition, Dr. Forsberg has considerable expertise in the management of metastatic bone disease and metabolic bone disease, as well as blast- and other combat-related wounds, and limb-sparing surgery. He developed the first validated model to help guide surgical treatment of metastatic bone disease and has completed research to further the understanding of soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities.

Dr. Forsberg earned his medical degree from the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the National Naval Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Forsberg also earned a PhD in clinical bioinformatics at Karolinska University in Stockholm, Sweden. 

Dr. Forsberg is an active researcher and principle investigator focusing on applying precision medicine to oncologic surgery by using machine-learning approaches, preventing combat-related heterotopic ossification and developing next-generation osseointegration techniques for patients with amputations. He is a regular contributor and previous guest editor for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, the specialty's premier peer-reviewed journal, and previously served as a guest editor for the Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances as well. 

Besides seeing patients and conducting research at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Forsberg is also affiliated with several other institutions. He holds appointments at the Murtha Cancer Center at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health; is the director of the Department of Defense Osseointegration Program; a professor of surgery at the F. Edward Helbert School of Medicine; and a United States Navy Commander. He has received the Team Award for Distinguished Service by the Defense Health Agency, as well as the Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations. Dr. Forsberg previously served as a medical officer in the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in Okinawa, Japan; the director of orthopaedic research in the Department of Regenerative Medicine at the Naval Medical Research Center; and deputy director of the Surgical Critical Care Initiative.

Dr. Forsberg is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the Orthopaedic Surgery Osseointegration Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Association.
