Professor of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Patrick Byrne, MBA, MD

Dr. Patrick Byrne is a Professor and the Director of The Johns Hopkins Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is also the Director of the Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship program at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Byrne focuses exclusively on plastic surgery of the face, head and neck. His true passion is clinical care, including surgery. His robust clinical practice has a specific focus on aesthetic surgery, with a vast experience in rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, and face lifting. Dr. Byrne is one of the world’s leading experts in facial reanimation, the surgical field that deals with the treatment of facial paralysis. Patients with facial paralysis routinely travel across the country, and from around the world, to seek his help. Byrne's research interests dovetail his clinical practice, and include the best techniques and effects of cosmetic surgery, the treatment of facial paralysis and the reconstruction of deformities due to cancer. He has worked extensively with faculty in the Johns Hopkins School of Bioengineering on translational research efforts. He is the author or co-author of well over 100 publications on topics related to facial plastic surgery. Dr. Byrne and his colleagues in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are very committed to education. He is routinely invited to lecture across the US and abroad, and he and his colleagues accept physicians from around the world for focused learning experiences in the field. The fellowship program he directs is amongst the most popular and competitive in the United States, typically drawing well over 50 applicants for the single position annually. The graduates from the program he directs now serve as full time faculty, many of them as division directors, at top academic institutions across the United States.

Dr. Byrne has served as a co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Facial Transplantation team since 2012. He is also the co-medical director of the Greater Baltimore Cleft Lip and Palate Team. This multidisciplinary team, approved by the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association, provides multidisciplinary expert care to children born with facial deformities. Dr. Byrne is also deeply committed to international volunteerism. Each year, Dr. Byrne also takes a team of volunteers from Johns Hopkins and other area hospitals to developing countries to perform free surgery on underprivileged children.

Dr. Byrne is double board certified, by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He holds appointments in the Departments of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and Dermatology. In 2015 he became the first Facial Plastic Surgeon in the history of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to be awarded the rank of Full Professor. In addition, he was amongst the initial co-hort of surgeons from his Department to be inducted into the Johns Hopkins Miller Coulson Society of Clinical Excellence. He served for over a decade as a Medical Director for Johns Hopkins Medicine International. In this capacity, he assisted medical centers in Panama, and Tokyo, to achieve accreditation by the Joint Commission International. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (class of 2015).
